CHAPTER 26

Standing in the weak sunshine of Portland’s spring, Niki realized she finally felt free. Her life here was done. Portland was now a place where she would return for visits, but somewhere else would become home.

“I have to get back to the office,” Marco said. “Niki, if we hear any hints that Jeff hasn’t gotten control of that little shit, I’ll let you know.”

Niki shrugged. She didn’t really care what happened here. “I think it’ll be okay. Thanks for all your help.”

Marco pulled her into a hug and then said goodbye to the other three before walking away.

“Do you need to go, too?” she asked Alicia.

Alicia looked up at Max. “Not right away. I can stick around for coffee.”

Niki watched a grin bloom on Max’s face. She wanted to get back to the inn, to her temporary family, but she could wait a little longer for the sake of Max and Alicia’s attraction. “A coffee sounds great. Alex, can you stay?”

He was looking at Marco who was a block away. “Yes, I can,” he said distantly. “Is there a good place around here?”

Alicia pointed to the corner. “Peet’s is great. Max, come on, we’ll grab a table before the morning coffee rush.” She looped her arm through Max’s and pulled him along with her.

Alex was still distracted. Now he was looking back toward the lobby they’d just left. Niki realized he was probably regretting his actions. Pushing one of the partners at Black Smith and Jones meant that was one firm less he could hope to join. Maybe Jeff would even interfere with any other firm hiring him.

Was he really here because he had a lead on a job? Was helping her was just a side trip for him?

“There are plenty of other firms.” She touched his arm to bring his attention back. “How did you find me?”

“We didn’t find you. It was a coincidence. Let’s join Max and Alicia.” He started walking.

Niki followed him. “Thank you for coming.”

“You were doing fine. Marco had your back.” He opened the door for her.

“Yes, it was nice of him to do that. Let’s get the coffee.” She joined the line at the counter. “Now that you’re here, are you going to look at some more places? Marco is really connected to the community. Most of his clients are law firms.”

“I don’t need any help with the job search, thanks. How long have you known Marco?” He ordered the coffees.

“Not long,” she said, wondering at the change of subject. “He’s a nice guy.”

“I’m sure,” he said.

Niki couldn’t figure out what had turned Alex so cold. “I’m grateful to him for what he was able to do. I’m not sure we could have dealt with this without his help.”
